Jeffrey S. Klein, Chairman of the Board of Directors
Jeffrey S. Klein is a seasoned and highly regarded media executive. Trained as both a lawyer and a journalist, he has 20 years of experience operating media and related businesses. In 2004, he was named as the most innovative CEO of a mid-sized trade publisher by B2B's Media Business Magazine. He writes a regular column about publishing for Folio: magazine.
Mr. Klein spent 15 years with the Los Angeles Times and Times Mirror in senior management positions, including Senior Vice President and General Manager, News and Senior Vice President, Consumer Marketing. He also served as president of two large regional editions of the newspaper. For several years, he was also President and CEO of California Community News Corp, a Times Mirror company which published community newspapers in Southern California. Under his marketing leadership at the Los Angeles Times, the newspaper became the largest circulation metropolitan daily in the United States. While serving in a corporate position at Times Mirror, he also was responsible for two company television stations.
Mr. Klein began his career as a lawyer, first in the entertainment industry representing movie stars and production companies, and later on behalf of the Los Angeles Times as a specialist in First Amendment issues. He has taught media law at the University of Southern California for several years. His early law work included work for Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt on the Kemeny Commission investigating the accident at Three Mile Island.
For ten years, he also wrote a weekly consumer law column for the Los Angeles Times. Klein's articles have also appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, the Online Journalism Review, and the Los Angeles Times Book Review. He has spoken at numerous industry events about marketing, management and leadership. He has served on numerous non-profit boards and community organizations, including the United Way, Foundation for American Communications, and the Alliance for the Arts.
Mr. Klein received his master's degree in journalism from Columbia University, his law degree from Stanford University, and his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Claremont McKenna College.
Michael J. Valenti, Executive Vice President
Mr. Valenti joined 101 following a 30-year career with the Los Angeles Times. Most recently he was Director of Circulation for the Los Angeles region with responsibility for circulation marketing, sales, customer service and distribution of more than 400,000 newspapers daily and 500,000 on Sunday, including subscriber and single copy sales. Prior to that, he held the positions of: Director of Human Resources, Assistant Director of Employee Relations, Compensation & Benefits Manager, Senior Compensation Analyst, Orange County Personnel Representative and Personnel Assistant.
Mr. Valenti received his BA in Psychology from Iona College in New York. Mr. Valenti is affiliated with the National Personnel Relations Association, the Society for Human Resources Management and the American Compensation Association.

Group Heads
Anne Armstrong
Ms. Armstrong has more than 25 years of experience in technology journalism and publishing. She spent a number of years editing IT publications, including the primary publication of the American Society for Information Science. She founded Langley Publications in 1984 to cover storage technologies. Ms. Armstrong was on the launch team for FCW in 1987 and became editor in 1992, a position she held until 1999 when she became president of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology. CIT is a non-profit created by Virginia to spur the growth of technology businesses in the commonwealth. She returned to FCW in September 2002 as publisher and business unit leader.
Ms. Armstrong has a B.A. degree in English from Vanderbilt University and a master's in the history of ideas from Johns Hopkins University.
Henry Allain
Mr. Allain has over 17 years of experience within the technology industry in various sales, marketing, management, and senior management roles. Mr. Allain began his career at Xerox Corporation and from there joined the Gartner Group as the National Sales Manager of the Global Events Division, managing trade shows and conferences in over 15 countries on 3 continents. Mr. Allain joined 101 in 1999 as the Advertising Director for Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine and ENT Magazine. He was then assigned the newly created role of Advertising Director West, for the Core IT Division of the company before moving to the role of National Advertising Director. Currently Mr. Allain is the Group Publisher of the Redmond Media Group overseeing Redmond Magazine, Redmond Channel Partner Magazine, Redmond Media Group’s 20 web properties and the TechMentor events.
Mr. Allain holds a BA in English from Arizona State University and is an active member of American Business Media’s Publishers Committee.
Ellen Hobbs
Prior to joining 101, Ms. Hobbs was the Vice President of Business Development for TDWI, the leading educational organization in the data warehousing industry. Before TDWI, Ms. Hobbs was the Channel Marketing Manager for Adaptec Corporation where she was responsible for all international and domestic channel marketing programs for Adaptec’s Networking Products Group. She has previously held marketing positions with various software vendors, including Computer Associates and Legent Corporation where she served as the Marketing Communications Manager for the Database Business Unit.
Ms. Hobbs holds a BS and MS in Communications from the University of Washington.
Wendy LaDuke
Ms. La Duke has been involved in education technology publishing for more than 20 years, holding positions in sales, operations and management at T.H.E. Journal, the oldest, continuously published magazine covering the education technology market. Ms. La Duke joined 101communications in April 2005, broadening her responsibilities at that time to include Campus Technology and all of 101’s ancillary education technology products. During her career, in addition to managing the print operations, content and circulation for T.H.E Journal, Ms. La Duke has overseen the development and expansion of numerous online properties and creation of T.H.E. Institute, which provides professional development and consulting services for the education technology market.
Ms. La Duke holds a BA in Economics from California State University, Long Beach. She sits on the Board of the Florida Educational Technology Conference, and is an active member of the Consortium for School Networking, International Society for Technology in Education, Centers for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and State Educational Technology Directors Association.
Phyllis Gurgevich
Ms. Gurgevich has more than 15 years experience in the publishing industry. Prior to joining Recharger in 1995, she was responsible for advertising sales, distribution and marketing for What’s On in Las Vegas magazine. Earlier in her career she worked for BB Graphics, a Midwestern company that publishes advertising-driven association newsletters.
A Midwest native, Ms. Gurgevich grew up near Chicago in Northwest Indiana and holds a BA in Sociology and English from Purdue University.
